The longer we humans stay in a familiar environment, the less we think about possible disturbing factors or flaws. This is especially true for our own home, and especially when said trouble spots are so microscopic. We spend about 7 hours cuddled up in our bed.

However, we are not even aware that we share our home retreat with tiny mites. A small number of the protozoa is also absolutely harmless. Nevertheless, the idea is not quite so pleasant. Because these small protozoa produce about 200 times their weight in excrements during their life and thus turn our mattress into a zone with the highest concentration of allergens. Just like us, the protozoa find it especially cozy in the bed at home, they feed on our skin scales and feel especially comfortable in warm and humid places. Here are some facts about dust mites:

1. We sleep an average of 7 hours a day on our mattress, 1/3 of our total lifetime is spent on it. The quality mattress has a life span of up to 10-15 years on average, making it the longest used piece of furniture in our home. 

2. There are about 1,5 million mites, dead mites that leave their droppings, dead skin scales and mold in our mattress. These elements are also found in carpets and upholstered furniture.

3. In their lifetime mites produce about 200 times the feces of their body weight. 

4. Mite droppings are small balls coated with mucus. They become fine powder which is like dust and contains an allergen called guanine.

5. Guanine is known to cause allergic reactions in humans and a major cause of asthma attacks. It causes inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes in the nose, as well as redness of the eyes and coughing.
